Episode 14: How to Embrace Creativity
💫 Episode 14: How to Embrace Creativity
Welcome back to Collective Guidance, love. I’m Charla Goodnight, and I’m so grateful you’re here—taking a moment to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with your soul. Today’s episode comes straight from the heart.
It’s called “Voice of the Wild Soul: Creativity, Play & the Divine.”
This conversation isn’t just about art, music, writing, or dance.
It’s about what creativity truly is: the language of the soul.
It’s how the divine moves through you, speaks to you, and expresses itself as you.
Creativity Isn’t Talent — It’s Connection
For most of my life, I didn’t think of myself as a creative person. Creativity felt like something reserved for “other people”—the dancers, poets, painters, and musicians whose gifts seemed to flow effortlessly.
My cousin was one of those people. I remember watching her dance when we were younger—the way she moved with such grace and emotion. It was like watching spirit embodied. I admired her deeply and often wished I had that same spark.
But over time, I learned something life-changing:
Creativity is not about skill. It’s about presence.
It’s about listening to the quiet, untamed voice inside you—your wild soul.
That voice lives underneath the schedules, the responsibilities, the noise.
It’s the voice that emerges when you dance in your kitchen, plant a garden, decorate a room, paint for no reason, sing while you’re cooking, or create something beautiful just for the joy of it.
When we create, we give our soul a microphone.
We say, I am here. I am alive. I am connected to something greater.
The Divine Speaks Through Creation
Watching my cousin dance was one of my earliest experiences of witnessing creativity as divinity. Later in life, when my oldest son told me he wanted to pursue music, I saw that same divine spark in him. I bought him his first mixer and software, and it was like something holy awakened in our home.
Soon after, he started painting—and again, I felt the divine moving through him.
Eventually, that energy inspired me to paint. And listen… my early paintings?
Not great. But that wasn’t the point.
Creativity isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being present.
It’s about stepping into the flow where time dissolves and spirit whispers.
Every sunset, every ocean wave, every blooming flower is a masterpiece of divine creativity. And we are part of that same creative pulse. We weren’t created just to survive—we were created to co-create.
When I Forgot How to Play
There was a moment in my life when I lost touch with play.
I got so focused on being a mom, running a business, staying responsible, and showing up for everyone else, that I forgot how to show up for my own creative spirit.
One day, while sitting outside feeling deeply disconnected, I stared out at the trees and birds in a swampy patch behind my home. As I prayed for guidance, I heard a whisper:
“Charla… go play.”
It felt radical. I didn’t think I had time for play.
But I listened.
I turned on music.
I cooked a delicious vegan meal.
And I danced in my kitchen.
(No alcohol, just authenticity and joy.)
And something awakened inside me—something I didn’t even realize had gone dormant.
Play reopens the channel to the divine.
It pulls us out of the mind and back into the heart.
The heart knows what is real.
The heart knows how to connect.
The heart knows how to create.
Your Soul Wants Flow, Not Perfection
You know that feeling when you lose track of time doing something you love?
That is divine alignment. That is the soul saying, Yes… more of this.
Flow is where:
insights appear,
healing happens,
miracles unfold,
and your inner child—the one who still believes in magic—comes forward.
My inner child is my eight-year-old self
spunky, silly, and full of sparkle.
She reminds me that creativity doesn’t have to be serious. It just has to be true.
A Moment for You
Place your hand on your heart for a second.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself:
When was the last time I created just for the joy of it?
Not for a goal.
Not for productivity.
Not for perfection.
Just for the feeling of being alive.
If it’s been a while, you’re not alone.
But your wild soul hasn’t left. She’s waiting patiently for you to come back and play.
Creativity as a Doorway to Spirit
Madonna said something beautiful on Jay Shetty’s podcast:
She shared that her creativity doesn’t come from her—it comes through her. It belongs to spirit.
I feel that deeply.
Creativity is another form of prayer.
Another way to listen.
Another way to surrender.
Whether you’re painting, cooking, dancing, planting flowers, decorating, writing, or making a vision board… you become a conduit of light.
A mirror of the divine expressing itself through your hands.
A Creative Invitation for This Week
If you've been feeling disconnected from spirit or from yourself, try one simple act of creativity this week:
✨ Turn on your favorite song and dance
✨ Arrange flowers around your home
✨ Cook a meal and plate it beautifully
✨ Sketch, journal, or paint with zero editing
✨ Create a vision board
✨ Walk in nature and notice colors & textures
✨ Decorate a corner of your space
✨ Play—really play—with your kids
The point isn’t the thing you create.
It’s the permission to feel alive.
The divine doesn’t speak in straight lines—it speaks in rhythm, color, and intuition.
Remember Who You Are
Creativity is the practice of remembering that you are a creator too.
Play is how your soul breathes.
Joy, laughter, imagination—these are sacred acts of devotion.
The next time you feel disconnected…
don’t force it…
don’t search for the perfect meditation…
don’t wait for clarity.
Go create something.
Go play.
Go be with your wild soul.
She knows the way home.
