56 - Timeline Shifting: How to Step Into the Life You Actually Want
💫Episode 56 - Timeline Shifting: How to Step Into the Life You Actually Want
"What if the version of your life you've been living isn't the only one available to you? What if right now there are multiple versions of your life already in motion — and the one you're experiencing is simply the one you're agreeing to live?"
That question is the doorway into one of the most powerful episodes Charla Goodnight has ever recorded. And if you've been feeling stuck, like you're living the same year on repeat, or like something inside you is desperately ready to shift — this one is for you.
In Episode 56 of Collective Guidance, Charla takes us deep into the concept of timelines — what they are, why we get anchored in the old ones, and exactly how to release them so you can consciously walk into a new version of your life. This isn't toxic positivity. This isn't spiritual bypassing. This is grounded, practical, soul-level work.
What Is a Timeline, Really?
In the personal growth and spiritual space, a timeline isn't just a sequence of events on a calendar. It's a lived experience — the version of your life that results from a specific set of beliefs, identity, and energetic state.
Think about it this way. Right now, there is a version of you who stayed in that relationship you left. A version who took the job you turned down. A version who believed every limiting story your family told you about who you were supposed to be. And there's also a version of you who went after everything you've ever wanted — who is living, right now, the exact life you dream about.
These aren't just hypotheticals. In the language of quantum physics and spiritual frameworks alike, multiple possibilities exist simultaneously. The one you experience is the one your energy, beliefs, and identity are in resonance with.
Neuroscience backs this up. Your brain doesn't passively experience reality — it constructs it based on your beliefs, past experiences, and the stories you repeat to yourself every single day. This is the reticular activating system (RAS) at work — a filtering mechanism that confirms whatever identity you hold about yourself. Shift the identity, and the brain begins filtering reality differently.
That is timeline shifting. Not magic. Not wishful thinking. Rewiring your perceptional system to align with a new version of reality.
What Keeps You Anchored in the Old Timeline
Here's the truth that most manifestation teachings skip over: you cannot board a new flight while you're still sitting on the old plane.
Before you can step into a new timeline, you have to release the one you've been living. And that requires four key steps.
1. Get Honest About the Timeline You've Been Living
Not the story you tell at parties — the real one. What beliefs about yourself have been running your life? The quiet ones: I'm not the kind of person who... or People like me don't get to... or I have to work harder than everyone else just to deserve...
Ask yourself: What does this version of me believe? How do I move through the world? What do I accept? What do I expect?
2. Grieve It
This is where most spiritual and manifestation communities get it wrong. The push to just think positive and skip the grief work is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. As Charla shares from 30 years of working with people's bodies and minds:
"What you do not process gets stored in the body — in your nervous system, and most importantly in your patterns."
Even a timeline that caused you pain felt like home. The version of you who lived it was doing their best, keeping you safe in the only ways they knew how. Before you shift, honor what you're leaving behind. A powerful practice: write a letter to your old self. Thank yourself for what you survived. Acknowledge the growth. Then burn it — safely — and release it to the universe.
3. Cut the Energetic Cords
We are tethered to old timelines through energetic threads — people's expectations, old vows made consciously or unconsciously, agreements that were never truly yours to carry. A cord cutting practice doesn't mean cutting people out of your life. It means releasing the energetic agreements that keep you locked into an old version of yourself.
Try this: get quiet, close your eyes, and visualize the cords connected to you. One by one, gently release them and declare: I release this agreement. This no longer defines me. I am free to become who I am meant to be.
4. Stop Rehearsing the Old Story
Every time you replay the story of your failure, your limitation, or this is just how my life goes — you are booking a return ticket on the flight you just tried to leave. Awareness is everything. When the old loop starts, redirect it. Not through suppression, but through a conscious choice: that story is no longer part of me.
How to Consciously Walk Into a New Timeline
Once the release work is done, the exciting part begins. Here's how to actually step into the new timeline.
Step 1: Get Clear on Who You Are — Not What You Want
The new timeline isn't about what you want to have. It's about who you are being. Identity comes before outcome. You don't get your way into a new timeline — you become your way into it.
Ask yourself: Who is the version of me for whom this life is already normal? What does that person believe about money, love, their own worthiness? How do they make decisions? How do they carry themselves? That is your North Star.
Step 2: Begin Living in the Frequency of That Timeline Now
This is where embodiment comes in — and where Charla's background in fitness and spirituality collide beautifully. Your body carries your identity. The way you breathe, the way you walk, the way you hold tension in your muscles — all of it is constantly communicating with your nervous system about who you believe yourself to be.
When you move like the person you're becoming, breathe like them, take up space like them — you begin encoding that identity into your cells.
Practical practices to try:
Morning embodiment: Before touching your phone, spend two to three minutes feeling into the timeline you're choosing. Let it inhabit your body before the day begins.
Movement with intention: Let your workout be an act of devotion to your future self. Visualize releasing the old version and becoming the new one as you move.
Scripting: Write in present tense, full sensory detail, from the perspective of the version of you already living this life. Not I want — but I am, I have, I feel.
Step 3: Make Decisions From the New Timeline
This is where most people stall. They do the visualization, they journal, they feel amazing — and then they go make the same old decisions because familiarity feels safer than change.
Here's the reframe: every decision you make is a vote for a timeline. When you say yes to something that scares you a little but aligns with who you're becoming — that's a vote for the new one. You don't need to overhaul your life overnight. Just start asking: is this decision coming from the old version of me, or the new one?
Becoming Is Not Erasing
One of the most grounding things Charla offers in this episode is this: we are not erasing the old self. We are integrating it.
Like a snake shedding its skin — the old skin served a purpose. It protected you. It kept you alive. But at a certain point, it becomes a limitation. The new version of you doesn't eliminate who you've been. It carries the wisdom, the resilience, the hard-won knowing — and sheds only the parts that were never truly yours to begin with. The coping mechanisms. The armor. The smallness you adopted to be acceptable.
Identity shifting isn't a one-time event. It's a practice — a daily choosing, again and again, to respond from the new identity instead of the old one. Until one day, the new identity becomes your default.
You Don't Need Permission
The thing that holds most people back? Waiting for an external sign that they've earned the right to become who they know they're meant to be.
You don't need permission. The timeline doesn't begin when the circumstances change. It begins the moment you decide.
And that moment is now.
Your Reflection Prompt for This Week
What timeline have I been living — and what timeline am I ready to choose?
Sit with that. Get honest. And then take one action — just one — that belongs to the new version of you. A phone call. A boundary. A walk. A conversation you've been putting off. One quiet yes.
That's how timelines shift. Not all at once. Just one conscious choice at a time.
